Investing in the Future of Public Health: Data Maven at Career Connect

Data Maven at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health’s Career Connect event.

At Data Maven, we believe that building a healthier future starts with investing in the next generation of public health professionals. That’s why we were thrilled to participate in the Career Connect event hosted annually by the University of Minnesota School of Public Health Career Services (UMN SPH) — an inspiring afternoon of networking, mentorship, and meaningful conversations.

Career Connect brings together students exploring careers in public health with employers from nonprofit, government, and corporate sectors. We joined as an employer representative, sharing insights into our work, our career paths, and the kinds of projects we tackle as a public health consulting firm.

As a women-owned company dedicated to transforming complex health data into actionable insights, we were excited to talk with students about how epidemiology, data analysis, and effective communication intersect in real-world settings. We had conversations about everything from maternal and child health to data visualization best practices to what it's like working with national survey datasets.

From interns to leaders: Alexia (Director of Operations) and Natasha (Epidemiologist & Intern Manager) began their journeys at Data Maven as graduate student interns in 2016 and 2018, respectively. Data Maven continues to support the next generation of public health professionals, including the 24 UMN SPH students Data Maven has hired to date.

We left Career Connect energized by the talent, thoughtfulness, and enthusiasm of the students we met. If what we saw is any indication, the future of public health is in very good hands. We’re grateful to the School of Public Health for hosting this event and look forward to continuing to connect with emerging public health professionals. Whether through mentorship, collaboration, or future hiring, we’re committed to supporting a passionate, skilled, and inclusive public health workforce.
